Contoy Island

Contoy Island

  03/ JUL/ 2019

Visiting the island Contoy can not miss the agenda of every nature lover!

The first thing we notice when arriving at Contoy is a sky full of sea birds, trails guarded by iguanas, and hundreds of hermit crabs, guardians of the beaches.

It is an uninhabited island, away from the hustle and bustle and the cities where you feel immersed and part of the purest clean and exuberant nature.

Protected since 1961, it is the most important refuge of marine birds of the Mexican Caribbean. Its lagoons, mangroves and low jungles are home to 152 registered bird species.

You get to Isla de Contoy in authorized boats starting from Cancun, Puerto Juarez or Isla Mujeres.

After a walk of between one and two hours depending on the type of boat, the starting point and the weather, you will arrive at this hidden paradise of the Mexican Caribbean.

To the south of the island, the great Mesoamerican reef, the second largest reef in the world, begins!

The waters around Contoy are very rich in nutrients and food, which is why a variety of manta rays, whale sharks and hundreds of species of fish that live in this water arrive on these coasts.

On the island there is a pier, a visitor center with a museographic exhibition, an observation tower 20 meters high, trails where you can see the flora and fauna of the island, a birdwatching viewpoint, two large dining palapas for visitors.
