The Founders Park of Playa del Carmen, is one of the main historical sites of this city. This is where the millions of tourists who cross Fifth Avenue or to get to the fiscal dock and cross to the island of Cozumel pass;

Its origin, which dates back to the 50's, was thinking of a community nucleus, where the first families met to live together.

It is said that it is the oldest in Playa del Carmen, it was like the center of Playa, over the 60’s, it was taking shape; About 6 or 8 houses of the original families were around the site, and the Chapel was built.

Here there was also an area for sports. Right where the Portal Maya is today was the basketball court, and they had soccer and baseball, where they also practiced “cachibol”.

The church was the first thing that was done, everything else was wasteland, and this church was made in the early 60’s,
It was right here that everyone gathered, whether to live together, celebrate, the fish fryers for local celebrations; on the day of the Virgen del Carmen, the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the day of the Marina. Everything was done here, it was the only place; the community met almost daily. ”

For 2012, being Playa del Carmen a consolidated destination, and thanks to the support of the private sector, the “Portal Maya” was placed, immediately becoming one of the city's icons.

The Fundadores Park will always be the most important park in the city, due to the history that it houses in the heart of all who knew a young beach and kept it in our hearts.
